There are some Z87 motherboards (maybe some other 8 series chipsets as well, but I know of a few Z87s off the top of my head), such as the Asus Maximus VI Formula, however to make things easy, I recommend sticking to Z97 or newer chipset-based motherboards if you want to use NVMe drives as boot drives. In some cases, you need to perform a BIOS update in order to make the NVMe drive recognizeable by the BIOS. Z97 and H97 chipsets support booting from PCIe interface SSDs (including NVMe), so long as the motherboard has the slot for it if the motherboard does not have an m.2 slot, you will be restricted to booting from a PCIe slot if you want to use a PCIe interface SSD, and you can use a m.2 PCIe card to make that work. In this specific case, I will always first recommend checking the manuals.
